A couple of attorneys living in Malibu wanted a satellite division where they could not only work independently, but also meet with clients and earn employees.
The new building includes wooden exterior walls plus a highly abstracted sawtooth roof with angular cuts which change in shape and dimension. As opposed to produce a simple rectilinear volume, the design team took a sculptural strategy: the addition was envisioned as a series of blocks obliquely sliced and assembled in a descending order in part. To separate the office in the home, the staff constructed a skylit hallway on the west , also made the entry vestibule about the southwest. The other sides of the addition face the backyard.
Indoors, the extension contains a single room that's subtly broken into different programmatic areas. Occupying one side is really a fireplace and sitting area, where the attorneys can meet with clients in a cozy setting. The opposite side of the room includes closets , a small kitchen area and a conference table that seats up to eight. Up above is a large window, which gives views into the workplace in a elevator landing and a media room on the second floor. The elevator, that was not required by the town, enables visitors with limited mobility to get the newly renovated media room. The workplace is fitted with blonde wood, white walls and slate tile flooring.
Quite a few windows and wood-framed glass doors flood the double-height space with natural lighting. The interplay of mirrored daylight on the folding ceiling surfaces throughout the day provides a lightly modulating, diffused top lighting for contemplative work. The group also established an outdoor zone to the workplace that overlooks the hilly landscape, it includes built-in benches plus a fireplace, a fountain and an outdoor kitchen.
